What You Can Expect In Wisdom Teeth Removal?

January 10, 2022

Your dentist says it’s time to get rid of your wisdom teeth so that you can do that. They might send you to an oral surgeon, who will do the surgery in their office. For you to get better, it should only take a few days.

Why do we need wisdom teeth removal?

They are the third set of teeth in the back of your mouth. Most of the time, they’re between the ages of 17 and 25, and they can be seen on X-rays.

For one of these reasons, most people have them taken out:

  • Your mouth is too small
  • You can’t fit an extra set of teeth in your jaw.
  • You have a toothache or gum disease. To get to your wisdom teeth with your toothbrush or dental floss, you may not be able to reach them.

Before the surgery

  • In the beginning, you’ll meet with the oral surgeon to talk about what will happen. Make sure to talk about any health problems you have at this meeting.
  • You can ask any questions you have about the Surgery that you don’t know the answer to.
  • Then, talk about what kind of anesthesia you’ll be given. You can be numb or asleep during Surgery.
  • Set aside time to have Surgery and rest at home afterward. Children, pets, or a ride home can be set up.
  • In Surgery, you should have your Surgery in about an hour and a half.
  • You’ll get one of these types of anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain when your tooth is taken out:
  • Novocaine, lidocaine, or mepivacaine are some of the local anesthetics that your doctor will give you to make your mouth feel numb before the Surgery. You can also breathe nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) when you’re having Surgery to relax or even fall asleep. You should be able to feel alert again soon.
  • Sedation can be given through an IV. The surgeon will numb your mouth and give you drugs through a vein in your arm to make you sleepy during Surgery. You might fall asleep during the whole thing.

After the surgery

Everyone reacts to anesthesia differently. If you had a local anesthetic and are still awake, you might be able to drive home to start your recovery from the Surgery. You might even be able to go back to work or do your everyday things. This is an excellent thing to do. If you have general anesthesia or are still drowsy, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

Most people don’t feel any pain after Surgery. You’re likely to have some swelling and mild discomfort for three or four days. It will likely take a few weeks when your mouth is done healing.

Follow your doctor’s advice to get better faster.

Tips for the first three days after surgery:

Dos:

  1. You can apply a cold pack on your face to keep your face from getting swollen or your skin color going dark.
  2. A sore jaw? Use moist heat
  3. As you gently open and close your mouth, do this to work your jaw.
  4. People who want to eat soft foods like pasta or rice should also eat soup.
  5. Drink a lot of water.
  6. When brushing your teeth the second day, do it every day. Don’t touch blood clots.
  7. Take the medicines your doctor has told you to take to help with pain or swelling.
  8. If you have a fever or your pain or swelling doesn’t go away, call your doctor.

Don’ts:

  1. When you bite, you may break up blood clots that help your mouth heal.
  2. Take care when you rinse your mouth. Your doctor might tell you to rinse your mouth with salt water gently.
  3. People who have wounds should not eat hard, crunchy, or sticky foods.
  4. Keep your hands off the cigarette butt. If you smoke, you may not be able to recover as quickly.

Wisdom teeth surgery can sometimes lead to more problems than the actual procedure. Your mouth will be grateful that you did it sooner!
